What is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist?

and why you should trust them

A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) is a nationally recognized credential for professionals who are trained to improve athletic performance through strength training, conditioning, and movement science.

The CSCS credential is issued by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and is widely considered the gold standard for working with athletes.

What Makes a CSCS Different?

Why This Matters for Athletes:

To become a CSCS, an individual must:

✔️ Hold a bachelor’s degree (minimum requirement)
✔️ Pass a comprehensive national examination covering exercise science, program design, and athlete development
✔️ Demonstrate knowledge in strength training, speed, power, and conditioning
✔️ Maintain continuing education to stay current in the field

Training programs should be:

  • Structured (designed for progression and performance)

  • Sport-specific (aligned with the demands of the sport)

  • Safe and effective (reducing injury risk while improving output)

A CSCS is trained to design programs that support all three.

Not all training certifications are the same.

The CSCS is specifically designed for working with athletes and requires a deeper understanding of performance, biomechanics, and long-term athletic development compared to general fitness certifications.

CSCS vs. General Fitness Certifications

Because performance isn’t just about how you train—or how you eat. It’s how those two work together.
